Admissions Testing

What is NBT?

The National Benchmark Tests measure academic readiness for university. Some South African universities use them together with school results, while others use them for placement or support decisions.

What the NBTs are for

The tests are designed to give universities more information about an applicant’s readiness for higher education. They do not replace your NSC results.

Main test areas

The NBT project describes the tests as including Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy, with a separate Mathematics test where required.

How booking works

You book through the official NBT system, choose an available date or venue, and then wait for results to be released through the official process.

Important reality check

Not every university requires NBTs, and the rules can differ by institution or faculty. The tiny bureaucratic dragons vary from place to place.

Best way to handle NBTs

Treat this like a timeline problem, not a panic problem.

1

Check your universities

Confirm whether your chosen institutions or faculties require the NBTs.

2

Book early

Choose a date that still gives universities enough time to receive or process your results.

3

Write once carefully

Plan properly, bring the right documents, and follow the official rules for the session.

4

Track results

Use the official NBT system to access results and follow each institution’s instructions.
